In 1975, I got my first skateboard. It was a solid oak Super Surfer with clay, loose ball-bearing wheels. Since then, I got a better board and I also skated some back-yard pools. Many pools are just skate-able and fun enough with kinks, pits and harsh transitions and we "Shut up and skate" them. If you're lucky and you pay your dues and play your cards right, you might get into one of the kind that you'll never forget. You'll be stoked forever! Pool skating is like that. It can be extremely immersive: From the commitment it takes to barge, to the discipline of "the 15 minute rule", and, of course, there is the unconditional love of hydrodynamics and hazardous waste. Ultimately, It is the quest to blend familiar with the unknown and that is the lure and the hook. Adrenalin flows differently in that environment. Your heightened senses bring details into focus as distinct and vivid memories when that specific time and space consciousness is ingrained. Ordinary objects become relevant, meaningful and tangible reminders of the questionable decisions made and the inevitable regrets gone unrealized.
